Treason: Playing Cards

The theme of this play cards deck is Treason. Why Treason? I was inspired by the story of Catherine II of Russia. A woman who plotted and executed the murder of her deranged husband, Peter III, who was unpopular as Ruler of Russia.

Each suit tells the story of a different act of treason committed during the 18th century.

Catherine II

Catherine II

Also known as Catherine the Great, was a ruthless, but adored queen ruling from 1762 until 1796. Under Catherine the Great, Russia was revitalised; it grew larger and stronger, and was recognised as one of the great powers of Europe.

How did this great ruler come to power? After coup d'état when her husband, Peter III, was assassinated, she rose to power. Although there is no proof of her involvement in this coup, there are strong ties which lead you to wonder..

The Mad King - A Royal Affiar

What's more treasonous than an affair between a kings wife and his most trusted confidant? This suit is base on the affair of Caroline Matilda and Johann Friedrich Struensee.
